Coffin Soulship

A very rare coffin model probably for shamanic ritual.

The ends with  Hornbill/Watersnake/Bird heads , one side is decorated with a painted watersnake.

More or less comparable coffins in the shape of a soul ship are described by Schärer in his work Ngaju religion p. 93. 

A very interesting piece with enormous important function in Ngaju culture.

Provenance : Part of a collection coming from a Swiss family who where living on Borneo around 1930.

Size:   60 cm long.
