Bidayuh war sword
A very old scarce latok-like Bidayuh sword.
The long wooden handle different from the more usual Latok and Buko swords
The hooked blade in very thick and heavy ( weight is 1,17 kg )
The scabbard is painted with dragon blood and adorned with red tufts of hair
and many feathers.
Between the quite large amount of latoks and buko's in Dutch museum collections I could find only one similar ( but scabbard less) example what was coming from the old Royal Military Academy Breda ( KMA) They transferred their collection to the World Museum Leiden after their closing in 1959. Another example is in the Royal Armories in Stockholm .
Early 19th century
West Borneo
Size total: 77 cm
Blade: 52 / 38 cm
