Hudoq Mask
A beautiful Dayak Hudoq mask purchased during an Dayak art exhibition on the
Pasar Malam celebrating the 10th year jubilee of the Sultan of Kutai ,Adji Mohamad Pariksit and the birthday of queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands in 1930.
An old label in the mask with text :
" Herdenking Pasar Malam Tenggarong 17 augustus t/m 14 sept ' 30 Saaloeddin.
In the newspaper Het nieuws van den dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië
dating from July 19th 1930 we found an article of this pasar.
During this event there was a Kutei and Dayak art exhibition and the performing of Dayaks dances
This mask was most likely purchased from that art exhibition or used by of one of the mentioned Dayak dancers.
It is possible that " Saaloeddin" is the name of the seller or a relative of him as we found a dealer named " Saäloedin " who was active in South Borneo .
The mask is very well carved and painted with great care.
The eye mirrors and and wooden earlobe stretchers are original and in very good condition.
Two ear tusks missing and two teeth restored.
Some old cracks and glues but a great and impressive example.
The mask has a nice warm patina.
End 19 th/ begin 20th century

Total with stand 52 cm.
