Surik VOC

A traditional sword from the Antoni tribe on Timor

with fine decorated horn hilt.

The hair work is in a very good condition.

The blade is a trade blade marked with VOC logo and

"A" from Amsterdam and the year number "1778".

The Dutch "Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie" ordered their blades

in Solingen for the sabres of their soldiers.

For the trade of Timorese sandalwood the VOC however, bought cheap iron

in Japan but the Timoresetraders preferred

VOC marked blades for quality reasons.
