Timor VOC sword

Sword from Timor with beautiful carved horn hilt in traditional style. Two sides are adorned with red dyed goat hair. Wooden original scabbard wounded with rattan.

The blade is a 260 years old marked VOC ( Vereeningde Oost Indische Compangie) blade marked 1758 , and "A" a mark for the tradeoffice of Amsterdam.

In the Sandalwood trade, iron blades where brought to Timor by the Dutch. Firstly the Dutch tried to trade inferior cheap blades but the Timorese preferred this with VOC markings.
